HARDSCAPES: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
A little about hardscapes…
If you’ve ever been around a landscaper, you’ve probably heard him or her refer to hardscapes, but what does that really mean? In landscape design you have two basic components: hardscapes and softscapes, which refer to the types of materials being used. Hardscapes involve rock, brick, or stone (hard elements), while softscapes refer to organic material such as plants, trees, shrubs, etc. (soft elements). The goal of a good landscaper is to incorporate both hardscape and softscape elements into a design to create a complete and aesthetically pleasing final product.
Hardscapes can be used in a variety of projects, including:
- Retaining Walls
- Water Features
- Landscape Edging
- Fire Pits
- Landscape Boulders
- Side walks or Walkways
- Outdoor Kitchens
One of the most important elements in a hardscape project is your foundation. Just like your home, the foundation of a hardscape project provides the base and stability of the project.
Hardscape projects can also vary dramatically in cost, size and complexity. While a small retaining wall can be quite affordable and completed in a matter of hours, other large-scale projects may take weeks, depending on size and design elements. It’s best to meet with a trained landscape professional to discuss your design ideas and budget to create a project you will enjoy for many years to come.
